This page has links to seedling photos. Since the seedlings are un-named, many of them are designated with letters and numbers.

Note, many of the seedlings are of Hulthemias.

To learn more about Hulthemias, see article on Hulthemia Roses and the Red Blotch, (first published in the Rose Hybridizers' Association Newsletter Spring 2007). Click on the links below to see the photos.

New 2008 Rose Seedlings
  • Red Mini - Code named "L198-1".  Clean and possibly with good form.  It is from a cross of J29-4 X 'Caliente'.  This was a crossed that was made repeatedly and produced more than 1,000 seedlings.
  • Red Mini vs. Miniflora - Code named "L198-2".  Similar to the sister seedling above but bigger.
  • Another Red Mini (might be a miniflora) - Code named "L198-3".  A sister seedling to the above seedling that I think I like better.
  • Red Miniflora - "L198-4".  Sister to above, with a bit larger blooms.
  • Warm Apricot Shrub - Code named "L91-2".  This one is special.  It is very clean, has large blooms and moderate fragrance.  It is from a cross of <{'Halo Today' X ['Geisha' X ('Tobo' X 'Singin' in the Rain')]}X ('Stainless Steel'' X 'Baby Love')> X 'Julia Child'.
  • Warm Yellow Shrub - Code names "L91-1".  A sister seedling to the above seedling.
  • Yellow Shrub - Code named "L91-3".  Also a sister seedling to the above seedling.
  • Floriferous Yellow Shrub - Code named "L195".  It is a cross of J137-4 X J149-2.  Even as a seedling it is putting out lots of blooms.
  • Cream Miniflora - Code named "L215.  This is a seedling of 'Fairhope' and appears to have exhibition form.
  • Light Apricot Miniflora - Code names "221".  Another 'Fairhope' baby, it should have good exhibition form.
  • Burnt Burgundy/Yellow Stripe Shrub - Code name "L118-2".  Comes from a cross of {[('Orangeade' X 'Abraham Darby') X 'Midnight Blue'] X [('Stainless Steel' X 'Purple Tiger') X 'Baby Love']} X 'Julia Child'.
  • Yellow/Red Striped Shrub - Code named "L118-1".  A sister seedling to the above.  It is quite vigorous.  Most of its blooms are not as striped as this one.
  • Lighter Apricot Miniflora - Code named "L1-1".  This is from a cross of 'Pearl Sanford' X ['Chipmunk' X ('Sam Trivitt' X 'Baby Love')].
  • Yellow Shrub - Code named "L161-1".  From a cross of ['Gemini' X ('Stainless Steel' X 'Baby Love')] X 'Julia Child'.
  • Dark Pink Miniflora - Code named "L17-1".  From a cross of ['Fairhope' X ('Sam Trivitt' X 'Baby Love')] X 'Black Magic'.
  • Yellow/Pink Striped Shrub - Code named "L187-1".  From a cross of K129-2 X unknown hulthemia.  I cannot see a blotch on this one, but may keep it for the color and bloom form.
  • Pink Miniflora - Code named "L216-1".  From a cross of 'Fairhope' X [('Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love') X 'Home Run'].
  • Yellow Shrub - Code named "L41-1".  This has a rich color with an old-fashioned look to it, from a cross of ['Fairhope X ('Stainless Steel' X 'Baby Love')] X [('Stainless Steel' X 'Baby Love') X 'Julia Child'].
  • Bright Yellow Shrub - Code named "L52".  This is probably the best yellow this year.  It comes from a cross of ['Sam Trivitt'' X ('Stainless Steel' X 'Baby Love')] X {[('Small Miracle' X 'Glowing Peace') X 'Baby Love'] X ('Stainless Steel' X 'Baby Love')}.
  • Pink Single Shrub - Code named "56-2".  This should prove to be a very clean shrub (I hope!).  It is from a cross of {'Halo Today' X ['Geisha' X ('Tobo' X 'Singin' in the Rain')]} X J76-3.
2008 Hulthemia Photos
  • Generations of Petals - Here you can follow the "improvement" of the blotch in generations of repeat blooming hulthemias.  This table with be updated as generations are added.
  • New 6th generation hulthemia mini - This one should have a very distinctive blotch as it matures.  This is one of the darkest blotches so far among the new seedlings in 2008.  Because of its excellent blotch, it was used immediately in crosses as a pollen parent in 2008.
  • Pink with Dark Blotch Single Hulthemia - This is probably the best of 2008.  A very late bloomer.  Bloomed for the first time on 6-27-08.  It is from a cross of J137-5 X KH2 ("KH2" was the designation that I gave to "mixed 2007 hulthemia seedling pollen", where the pollen from the best 2007 hulthemia seedlings was mixed and used to pollinate other hulthemias to hopefully improve fertility and hip "take").
  • Cream Mini Hulthemia - Code named "L61".  This is perhaps the most floriferous of the hulthemia seedlings from this year.  Blooms only last two days, so the display is not as good as it could be.
  • Rich Pink Hulthemia - Code named "L154-1".  This one has only a small blotch, but will be kept because of its great long lasting color.  It is from a cross of 'Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love' X "Jamore" (a Peter James hulthemia).
  • Pink/White Striped Hulthemia - Code named "L180-1".   My daughter suggested that I try crossing the hulthemias with some of the striped roses.  This is one of the better ones from this year.
  • Pink Hulthemia - Code named "L226-1".  This one shows sort of bands of color radiating out from the center.
  • Light Apricot Hulthemia - Code named "L83-1".  This is one of my favorite hulthemias from this year.
  • Dark Pink Hulthemia with Dark Blotch - Code named "L98-1".  This is from a cross of {[('Orangeade' X 'Abraham Darby') X 'Midnight Blue'] X ('Midnight Blue' X 'Baby Love')} X "Jamore" (a Peter James Hulthemia).
  • Pink Hulthemia - Code named "L99-1".  This is one of the first repeat blooming hulthemias from the H65-2 line.

Some 2008 Photos of 2007 Hulthemias

  • Light Pink Hulthemia - Code named "K201".  This was the best from 2007 and is still looking good and is extremely floriferous.
  • Yellow and Pink Sisters - Code named "K211-1" and "K211-2".  These are from the same cross, but very different in coloring.  The yellow one is quite fragrant.
  • Yellow single mini hulthemia - Code named "K34-1".  This is a fertile seed parent that will be used in future crosses.
  • Yellow Hulthemia - Code named "K224-1".  This one has attracted a honey bee.

2007 Rose Seedlings

  • Cream and Pink Striped Shrub - Code name "K129-2".  Blooms are medium sized to somewhat large and are fragrant.  It is from a cross of {[('Orangeade' X 'Abraham Darby') X 'Midnight Blue'] X ('Midnight Blue' X 'Baby Love')} X [('Orangeade' X 'Abraham Darby') X 'Midnight Blue'] X [('Stainless Steel' X 'Purple Tiger') X 'Baby Love'].
  • Light Coral Orange Floribunda - This is a classic exhibition form type rose.  It is from a cross of [('Lynn Anderson' X 'Tournament of Roses') X ('Roller Coaster' X 'Hot Tamale')] X [('Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love') X 'Kardinal'].
  • Yellow Floribunda - Has somewhat informal, though darker yellow blooms.  From a cross of H79-3 X I206.
  • Yellow-Orange Blend Miniflora - This seedling may have good form.  It is from a cross of 'Pearl Sanford' X I206.
  • Orange Stripe Shrub - This seedling has good holding power on the color.  Most orange seedlings seem to fade rather quickly, but not this one.  It is from a cross of 'Fourth of July' X {('Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love') X [('Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love') X ('Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love')]}.

New 2007 Hulthemia Seedlings

  • Yellow Mini Hulthemia - This one is a mini and has an orange blotch with the same color on the tips of the petals.  It is a 4th generation hulthemia and came from a cross of <{'Halo Today' X ['Geisha' X ('Tobo' X 'Singin' in the Rain')]}X [('Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love') X ('Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love')]> X I89-2.
  • Light Pink Hulthemia Shrub - This is a 5th generation hulthemia and is the best of 2007.  The coloring here provides a better contrast to highlight the blotch.  It is from a cross of J93-3 X I89-2 (each of these seedlings has their full parentage listed below).
  • Cream Hulthemia Shrub - This seedling resulted from a cross of I89-1, a fertile sister seedling of I89-2 noted below, crossed with I166, a double back cross of 'Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love'.  Notation is then as follows:  {[('Orangeade' X 'Abraham Darby') X 'Midnight Blue'] X 'Persian Sunset'} X {('Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love') X [('Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love') X ('Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love')]}.
  • Bright Yellow Orange Miniflora - This has hulthemia "blood", but lacks any evident blotch.  It might be "covered up" with a more dominant central yellow "eye".  It is from a cross of <{'Halo Today' X ['Geisha' X ('Tobo' X 'Singin' in the Rain')]}X 'Baby Love'> X {[('Orangeade' X 'Abraham Darby') X 'Midnight Blue'] X 'Persian Sunset'}.  You can really see the bright coloring of 'Persian Sunset' in this one.
  • Dark Pink Hulthemia Shrub - This is a 5th generation hulthemia and this bloom is from the first flush.  It holds the bloom color well with slight fade.  Blotch would be better noticed if the petal color were lighter.  It came from a cross of J93-6 (a sister seedling of J93-3 listed below) X I89-2.
  • Creamy White Hulthemia Shrub - This too, is a 5th generation hulthemia.  With maturity it is expected that the blotch will become darker.
  • Orange/Yellow Blend Hulthemia - This one has the brightest colors to date.  It has clean glossy foliage.
  • Cream Mini Hulthemia - This is a true miniature, with a nice compact bushy plant habit.  Though the blotch is small, this one appears to be fertile as a seed parent, so will be used in further breeding.  Parentage is <{'Halo Today' X ['Geisha' X ('Tobo' X 'Singin' in the Rain')]} X 'Baby Love'> X I89-2.
  • Pink Mini Hulthemia - This also is a 5th generation hulthemia.  It appears quite clean and petite.  The color is not exciting, but the blotch size is one of the largest that I have seen relative to the overall petal size.  It is from a cross of <{'Halo Today' X ['Geisha' X ('Tobo' X 'Singin' in the Rain')]}X [('Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love') X ('Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love')]> X I89-2.
  • Pink Hulthemia Shrub - Here is still another 5th generation hulthemia.  The hulthemia blotch is almost lost in the white central eye.
  • Yellow Hulthemia - This is only a 2nd generation hulthemia, but it is only once blooming.  Though it is not a new seedling this year, but is a 4 year old seedling, it only bloomed for the first time this year.  It was used in crosses this year to try to get repeat blooming in those bright colors.  It is from a direct cross with 'Tigris' as the seed parent and  [('Tobo' X 'Singin' in the Rain') X 'Henry Fonda'] as the pollen parent.
  • Potpourri of Hulthemia Petals - The blotch on these is less pronounced because this photo was taken on Jun 21st, after a spell of very  hot weather.  The blotch tends to lighten in the heat.

2006 Seedlings

  • A bright red 'Home Run' seedling:  J76-3 - A nice red floriferous shrub with bright yellow stamens, coming from a cross of ('Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love') X 'Home Run'.
  • A pink single shrub: J100-2 - The cross appears exactly as the one above, but the mother was a sister seedling to the mother in the above cross.  The cross is therefore, ('Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love') X 'Home Run'.
  • Floriferous fuchsia/white striped climber:  J29-1 -  It resulted from a cross of a non-descript cream colored single mini with a purple/white stripe climber seedling.  Parentage is <{'Halo Today' X ['Geisha' X ('Tobo' X 'Singin' in the Rain')]}X 'Baby Love'> X seedling.
  • Yellow/Orange Blend Miniflora:  J125 - Coming from a cross of an open pollinated seedling (probably a "self" seedling) of the same non-descript cream colored mini above by unknown.
  • Light Yellow Hulthemia with Dark Red Blotch:  J137-2 - A fourth generation hulthemia.  This is the best hulthemia from 2006, from a cross of {[('Orangeade' X 'Abraham Darby') X 'Midnight Blue'] X ('Geisha' X 'Baby Love'} X either G34 or I89-2 (see their parentages below under "Earlier Hulthemias").
  • Creamy Hulthemia:  J93-3 - Another fourth generation hulthemia, its blotch lightens considerably during the heat of summer. It is from a cross of {[('Orangeade' X 'Abraham Darby') X 'Midnight Blue'] X ('Midnight Blue' X 'Baby Love')} X <{'Halo Today' X ['Geisha' X ('Tobo' X 'Singin' in the Rain')]}X 'Tiggle'>.
  • Single Yellow Mini Hulthemia:  J10-1 - Still another fourth generation repeat blooming hulthemia, from a cross of <{'Halo Today' X ['Geisha' X ('Tobo' X 'Singin' in the Rain')]}X ('Geisha' X 'Baby Love')> X {[('Orangeade' X 'Abraham Darby') X 'Midnight Blue'] X 'Persian Sunset'}.
  • Orange Shrub:  J105 - A glossy shrub with orange single blooms with creamy white eyes. It came from a cross of ('Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love') X 'Space Odyssey'.

Earlier Hulthemia Seedlings

  • Alpha Repeat Blooming Hulthemia:  G34 - From 2003, this is my first ever repeat blooming hulthemia from a cross of {'Halo Today' X ['Geisha' X ('Tobo' X 'Singin' in the Rain')]}X 'Tiggle'.  Note, 'Tiggle' is a Chris Warner seedling that was an important breakthrough in hulthemia breeding.  It is quite clean, which is unusual for hulthemias and resulted from a cross of 'Tigris' X 'Baby Love'.
  • Yellow Hulthemia with Red Blotch H65-1 - From 2004, a non-repeat blooming hulthemia from a cross of 'Tigris' X [('Tobo' X 'Singin' in the Rain') X 'Henry Fonda']}.
  • Beta Repeat Blooming Hulthemia:  I89-2 - A 2005 seedling, is my second line of repeat blooming hulthemias with petals showing the red blotch, from a cross of [('Orangeade' X 'Abraham Darby') X 'Midnight Blue'] X 'Persian Sunset' (a Mr. Ralph Moore seedling), it really has too many petals to appreciate the blotch.
  • I89-2 petals - When the petals are removed the blotch can be better seen.
  • I84 petals - This is a 2005, non-repeat blooming hulthemia, that also has too many petals to see the blotch unless the petals are removed. Its pollen parent was also 'Persian Sunset'.
  • Tigris Seedling - From 2004, an open pollinated cross, possibly with ('Tobo' X 'Singin' in the Rain') X 'Henry Fonda'.  It is only 4 months old in this photo and repeat blooms very freely.  Unfortunately, this seedling died in the first year, probably from some genetic incompatibility.

2005 Seedlings

  • First for the unusual - "Purple Leopard" or spotted seedling - from a cross of 'Midnight Blue' X ('Midnight Blue' X 'Baby Love').
  • Yellow Hybrid Tea - from a cross of ('Gemini' X 'Baby Love') X {('Stainless Steel' X 'Singin' in the Rain') X [('Tobo' X 'Singin' in the Rain') X 'Henry Fonda']}.
  • Lavender Striped Shrub - from a cross of ['Midnight Blue' X ('Singin' in the Rain' X 'Angel Face')] X [('Stainless Steel' X 'Purple Tiger') X 'Baby Love'].
  • Pink Striped Shrub - from a cross of [('Orangeade' X 'Abraham Darby') X 'Midnight Blue'] X [('Stainless Steel' X 'Purple Tiger') X 'Baby Love'].
  • Yellow Mini  - This is my best yellow exhibition mini, coming from a cross of 'Fairhope' X 'Glowing Amber'.
  • Orange/Yellow Striped mini  - from a cross of ('Stainless Steel' X 'Purple Tiger') X 'Baby Love'.

2004 Seedlings

  • Brown Miniflora - from a cross of ('Lynn Anderson' X 'Tournament of Roses') X 'Hot Tamale'.  The photo appears orange, but the real color is a carmel-tan.
  • Orange Blend Miniflora - also from a cross of ('Lynn Anderson' X 'Tournament of Roses') X 'Hot Tamale'.
  • Yellow Miniflora - also from a cross of ('Lynn Anderson' X 'Tournament of Roses') X 'Hot Tamale'.  This combo has produced several excellent sister seedlings.
  • Yellow Exhibition Mini - resulting from a cross of ('Chipmunk' X 'Heather Sproul') X {('Stainless Steel' X 'Singin' in the Rain') X [('Tobo' X 'Singin' in the Rain') X 'Henry Fonda']}

2004 Seedlings with 'Baby Love' as the Pollen Parent

  • Yellow Mini - from a cross of {'Halo Today' X ['Geisha' X ('Tobo' X 'Singin' in the Rain')]}X 'Baby Love'.  This cross has shown very good disease resistance.
  • Cream Shrub - fading to white, from a cross of 'Marmalade Skies' X 'Baby Love'.
  • Light Apricot Mini - from a cross of 'Sam Trivitt' X 'Baby Love'.  It has reasonable form and completely free of powdery mildew.
  • Mini Single - Yellow
  • Mixed Family with 'Baby Love' as Dad.
  • Pink Blend Shrub - from a cross of [('Orangeade' X 'Abraham Darby') X 'Midnight Blue'] X 'Baby Love'.  This is my son, Silas' best seedling this year.
  • Unusual Mini - with red anthers, from a cross of 'Geisha' X 'Baby Love'.
  • Orange Shrub - from the same cross as the rose above, but very different from it.
  • Cream Mini - from a cross of 'Fairhope' X 'Baby Love'.  This is another seedling that my son Silas produced.
