Testing Germination of New Seed Parents
New seed parents are being tested by assessing germination rates of open
pollinated seeds. The seedling having
scant germination (toward the middle of the photo) will not be used in future crosses, whereas the mother of the
seedlings in the upper part of the photo (exhibiting good germination) will
become a new seed parent this year.
