Rose Breeding
  • Rose Hips - a rose breeder's "pot of gold"
  • Extracting Seeds - using the blender method as developed by Mr. Joe Winchel.
  • Planting Seeds in the Greenhouse - one by one.....
  • New seedling - stretching out
  • Newly germinated seedlings dying (brown) from Damp-off a fungus that attacks new seedlings.
  • New seedlings - growing rather thickly
  • Larger seedlings - growth is very rapid
  • Seedling bench - filled with baby roses
  • Assessing New Seed Parents - here is a photo of the seedling beds where seeds have been planted from new seedlings from last year to see whether or not the seeds from prospective new parent plants germinate well.  As you can see, areas adjacent to one another have dramatically different germination rates.  One of the most important tasks for a new rose breeder is to select from their own seedlings, new parent roses.  These roses will be added to the rose breeder's parent stock and represent "secret ingredients" since their seedlings are unique and one of a kind!
  • This seedling will bloom in about 2 weeks
  • Sproul Boys - helping in the greenhouse
  • Bouquet of Discarded Seedlings - most seedlings must be discarded
  • Sheer Bliss X Olympiad This picture shows the tendency for seedlings to resemble their parents (just like human kids).
  • It is important when breeding new roses, to not just look at the blooms.  Be sure to look at the FOLIAGE!
